How it works...

For IP addresses, Wireshark simply uses your laptop's resolving mechanisms, which are DNS and the Wireshark hosts file, located in the Wireshark home directory.

For the MAC manufacturers, Wireshark uses MAC address translations as defined by the IEEE 802 committee.

TCP and UDP port numbers are defined by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) at: http://www.iana.org/assignments/service-names-port-numbers/service-names-port-numbers.xhtml.
