《赶牲灵》是陕北吴堡县张家墕村农民歌手张天恩根据自己真实生活自编自唱的一首信天游。1955年被誉为“民间艺术天才”的张天恩调入北京中央歌舞团，曾以纯正的吴堡口音为毛主席、周总理清唱了这首《赶牲灵》，并得到中央领导的交口称赞。这个版本是歌唱家白秉权采录张天恩的原唱加工整理而成。

A Legend of Love on Journey belongs to xintianyou, a high-tessitura, rhythmically flexible type of northern Shaanxi folk songs. It was created by Zhang Tian’en, a native peasant, inspired by his own experience of love and marriage. In 1955, he became a professional singer and made this song popular among the public. The version in this anthology is notated according to a performance of Zhang himself recorded by Bai Bingquan, a female singer who made substantial contribution to the preservation and arrangement of northern Shaanxi folk songs.
